Penn State University
A major attraction in the Centre Region, the Penn State campus
is the site of home Nittany Lion sporting events such as football, soccer,
wrestling, volleyball, basketball, fencing, gymnastics, field and ice hockey.
There are two beautiful golf courses where you become the athlete. Penn
State's Center for the Performing Arts brings many shows to Eisenhower and Schwab Auditoriums
and the Playhouse and Pavilion Theaters that are performed
by the same actors appearing in New York City or Washington DC. Shaver's
Creek Environmental Center is a nature lover's haven. The Land Grant Frescoes painted
by Henry Varnum Poor in 1940 and 1949 in the Old Main Rotunda depict
the founding, aspirations and endeavors of this land grant university
of Pennsylvania. And a "must see" is the Nittany Lion Shrine near Rec
Hall where almost all alumni have had their photographs taken.
Bellefonte Victorian Christmas Among the many interesting sites in this mountainous central Pennsylvania
area are the historic villages of Bellefonte and Boalsburg which have many
shops of interesting crafts and antiques for tourists to enjoy.
Bellefonte's historic architecture is awe-inspiring to the many tourists
and university students that wander this pleasant town, located
only 10 miles from Carnegie House. Christmastime in Bellefonte is very special
with the celebration being Victorian in theme with residents participating
in full costume. Visitors enjoy carriage rides, caroling, tours of many
of the Victorian homes and happily gas-lighted streets. Boalsburg has many
interesting places to visit, including the Boal Mansion and Christopher Columbus Chapel,
the 28th Division Military Museum and several small shops on the diamond.
Amish of BellevilleThe village of Belleville is the site of one of the area's largest
Amish markets. Guests will delight in observing the Amish lifestyle,
modes of transportation and, of course, the quality of their crafts. There
are a variety of quilts, baked goods, and tooled leather along with other
specialized crafts.
Mount Nittany Winery The Mount Nittany Winery is close by; guests may tour these facilities and taste their products.
Tussey Mountain Ski Area and AmphitheaterThe Tussey Mountain Ski Area is minutes away from Carnegie House, providing
winter activity for the whole family. Located 5 miles east of State College,
Tussey Mountain provides 4 chair lifts and access to both skiers and snowboarders,
as well as an open-air amphitheater for summer concerts and events.
Fishing and Penn's Cave
The region's 89 miles of Class A trout streams, deemed "the best of the best"
by the Pennsylvania Fish Commission, are a favorite of many visitors, including Former President Jimmy Carter.
Perhaps the most unique landmark is Penn's Cave, America's
only all-water cavern and wildlife sanctuary. Open year round, the temperature
is a constant 55 degrees Fahrenheit. The cave can only be viewed by boat.
